Mimu Mimu overview - a new kid on the block in the world of Korean skincare

My review of three newly launched products by Mimu Mimu

Mimu Mimu is new Korean skincare brand that was launched in 2024. The blue and white checked design has drawn my attention, which is inspired by the microscopic maltese crosses found in the skin barrier of healthy skin. I also like their catch phrase 'Check your skin' which I find very clever. Mimu Mimu prides itself as the '3rd generation' skincare - but why? I have absolutely no idea. Who were the 1st and 2nd generation - no idea either! Mimu Mimu has minimal background information on its official website (https://mimumimu.shop/) as it is in the initial launch phase, but the description of the products is detailed and thorough.

Highlights

  • No fragrance in all products

  • Claimed to be suitable for all skin types

  • Mimu Mimu focuses on skin balance

The three products I received for review are the Heat Calming Cleansing Oil, Cool Calming Toner and Cool Calming Serum.

So let's dive into the reviews

Mimu Mimu Heat Calming Cleansing Oil

The Mimu Mimu Heat Calming Cleansing Oil is a really interesting one. It has a dual-phase formulation meaning that there are two layers in the bottle. Therefore it needs to be shaken really well (that is, vigorously well) to mix the two layers before applying. Otherwise the oil will appear to be very thick in texture as the pump will only have access to the bottom, denser layer of the oil.

Mimu Mimu created this oil with a home spa experience in mind. The formula has been designed to heat up and it contains hot spring water (onsen-sui), to effectively clean sebum, dirt and makeup.

I found this cleansing oil really pleasant to use. Two pumps, maybe at most three, were all I needed. The sensation of warming up upon contact was, well, sensational. It cleanses very effectively without harsh rubbing (and if you do find a lot of rubbing is required, it could be that the oil has not been mixed thoroughly!). In particular, I love that the oil can be rinsed off completely clean with warm water, without the feeling of any residue left behind.

A closer examination of the ingredient list also shows that this cleansing oil is full of calming plant extracts (including a good dose of centella asiatica i.e. cica extract), as well as a few different variations of hyaluronic acids which helps to keep skin hydrated.

I do find this cleansing oil a little bit small in size (200mL) - at least compared to the 260mL toner - and I am destined to run out of the cleansing oil first as my toner always lasts forever.

Mimu Mimu Cool Calming Toner

The Mimu Mimu Cool Calming Toner on the other hand, as the name suggests, has been formulated to lower skin temperature upon application. This Cooling toner contains centella asiatica extract, Jeju Lava seawater and again many variants of hyaluronic acids, for deep long-lasting hydration that plumps and moisturises deep within the skin. The variety of hyaluronic acids provide molecules at different molecular weights so that they can effectively penetrate the skin at different levels.

There are many beneficial ingredients in here, but what caught my eyes were the ceramide NP (ceramides are fantastic in maintaining a healthy skin barrier), and saccharomyces ferment filtrate (because my skin loves the nourishing effect of ferment filtrates of all sorts).

The toner is very calming on my skin. I do not usually like using cotton pads for my toners and I do find this toner slightly thin for my liking to apply directly onto skin. It can still be done but it could just be slightly messier. The toner is absorbed almost instantly to leave skin very refreshed - no sticky residue. The toner also prepares my skin for serum application.

Mimu Mimu Cool Calming Serum

The simplest way to describe this serum is that this is basically a hyaluronic acid serum. Again with a variety of hyaluronic acids in different molecular sizes, this serum is effective to bring the humectant molecule to different sub-layers in the skin. It also contain cica extract for the calming effect. This serum is very quick to be absorbed, without any sticky residue whatsoever. I tested all three products at the same time (the cleansing oil, toner and serum), and Mimu Mimu didn't supply me with moisturiser so I did not use any during my testing period. I am happy to report that, despite not using any moisturiser, my skin did not feel tight, dry or dehydrated, showing that these products are quite effective to maintain a moisture balance on their own. (Mimu Mimu has since bring out a moisturiser which I look forward to try!)

Here's something I find really great about K-beauty serums. A lot of them come in 50mL, which means a lot more value than the standard 30 mL serums.

Conclusive thoughts

I really enjoyed all the products I have tried from Mimu Mimu. The user experience side has been fantastic and they do what they claim to do. The products are on the basic side which is suitable for those looking to maintain a healthy and balanced skin barrier. They do not contain any reactive active ingredients, so they are suitable to be used together with other actives in the same skincare regime.

One last thought

What I received from Mimu Mimu was a very personal approach from start to finish. Starting with a personalised email showing that they have genuinely read my other blog posts and appreciated my honest thoughts, to receiving a personalised card letting me that I was the 17th member of the Mimu Crew campaign, all these small but thoughtful gestures added to the experience.
